2012 symbolises a new era for the DTM (German Touring Car Masters). The 13th season since the revamp in 2000 sees a comeback of the BMW as the third German Premium car manufacturer in the most popular international touring car series, entering the competition with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
The Munich manufacturers have already secured prominent pilots. Amongst others, Bruno Spengler and current champion Martin Tomczyk will be behind the steering wheels for BMW for the comeback season. Well known from the FIA WTCC, we will also get to see pilots Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus.
The 2012 season promises to be as exciting as never before, with an entirely new baseline of new vehicles – all manufacturers will start with coupés this season, providing all competitors with equal weapons. This should cause several gaps to close.
Nearly traditional at this stage, the mid September date will again show the eighth of ten season races. Last year, Mattias Ekström won in heavy rainfall. Due to the weather conditions, the 3.696 kilometre course recorded the longest race of the season. The pilots needed over 76 minutes to complete the shortened race of 45 laps. In comparison: The shortest race of the season in Spielberg did not even last 56 minutes.
